In order to maintain confidentiality, their real names do not appear here and the information given is such that they are not identifiable to any one individual. Karen: qqA very experienced tramper who also regularly rides mountainbikes recreationally.#q Bert: qqA tramper who does not mountainbike but who seldom uses frontcountry areas and is not worried by bikers.#q Rodney:qqA very keen, competitive mountain biker who also works in a bike shop. #q Paul:qqAn allround outdoor recreationist who participates in windsurfing, skiing, kayaking, tramping and alpine climbing as well as in mountainbiking.#q James:qqA fifteen year old mountainbiker who is just starting out in mountainbiking and is keen to get into racing. He definitely prefers to ride downhill as much as possible! He has been out tramping with scouts, but has not had very much other experience in the outdoors yet.#q Jo:qqA nineteen year old female who is a very competitive mountainbiker, but who has had very little other outdoor experience.#q Mary:qqA selfconfessed excouchpotato who found that she could enjoy physical activity when her friend introduced her to mountainbiking. She also has had very little other outdoor experience.#q Phillipa:qqAn experienced tramper, who has also tried a few other outdoor activities kayaking, running etc. She is now a keen mountainbiker and rides both competitively and recreationally as well.#q Anne:qqA teacher who does a lot of mountainbiking, tramping, skiing and kayaking.#q Maria:qqWorks in the outdoors where possible and has done a lot tramping, alpine climbing, skiing, windsurfing and also mountainbikes regularly.#q Bob:qqThis man has spent a lot of time in the outdoors climbing, cycletouring and tramping and is now a keen, recreational mountainbiker.#q Tracey:qqA slightly older mountainbiker who has done a lot of competitive running in the past and is also a tramper.#q Richard:qqA specialised mountainbiker who seems to spend every waking moment thinking about or participating in the sport. In the past he did a lot of caving.#q Maryanne:qqRichard's wife who also is a keen mountainbiker but also likes to get into the hills on foot. The bike has proved useful for getting to good hunting and tramping areas.#q Tony:qqWhen I interviewed this man, he was adamantly against mountainbiking however.n/n/n/ shortly afterwards he was introduced to it and now enjoys mountainbiking along with his other activities of road biking, jogging and walking.#q Jane:qqTony's wife who occasionally joined in the discussion and gave her point of view as a walkeronly.#q Tom:qqIn his thirties, Tom is an experienced backcountry tramper who has also found the Port Hills a good place for walking during his student years in Christchurch. He has done a little bit of mountainbiking on a borrowed bike. He feels strongly that mountainbiking is appropriate only in a few places, where they will not meet too many walkers and where walkers can see them coming from a reasonable distance.#q Henrietta:qqAn older female who has recently joined a walking group that spends time in frontcountry areas. She feels that mountainbikers must be aggressive in nature to get to the places they do on their bikes. Her son is a mountainbiker, and she feels that this is a healthy sport but that it is not appropriate on many Port Hills tracks.#q Grace:qqAn older woman who enjoys walking. Originally expressed the opinion that mountainbikers were different sort of people to walkers. She felt that mountainbikers did need some places that they could ride in legally, but she also said that she preferred not to meet them.#q Mike:qqAn experienced tramper who had done a wee bit of mountainbiking.#q Gillian:qqMike's partner who was interviewed at the same time. Also a very experienced tramper who had done some mountainbiking, but who felt that mountainbiking was not appropriate on narrow steep tracks. #q George:qqA keen climber and tramper and now a very keen mountainbiker who could not see why there is so much fuss about mountainbiking.#q Cath:qqGeorge's partner who does not mountainbike, but who is quite happy to walk in the same places that George bikes, and who does not generally mind meeting bikers. She is also a keen rock climber.#q Charles:qqAn older male who has spent much time walking on the Port Hills. He grew up in Lyttelton and remembers how it was when the Summit Road was just a walking track. Charles and his wife regularly go out walking round the Port Hills and Foothills of Canterbury.#q Chris:qqThis man was strongly against mountainbiking. He walks regularly, and has been an active backcountry user in the past.#q David:qqA landowner on the Port Hills who has a walking/ biking track running over his land.#q Duncan:qqA male of around 40 who is a keen mountainbiker over the summer months. He has little other outdoor experience.#q Luke:qqAn active member of the Summit Road Society, who does a lot of work for conservation and recreation in the area. #qk.n/n/n/ԌLeanne:qqAn older woman who has done a lot of running in the past and has been involved in local body politics. She feels that mountainbikers do need some provision, however, there should be some limits on them.#q A group of students from Canterbury University: A focus groups session was held with seven people all of whom had a wide range of outdoor interests including kayaking, alpine climbing, skiing, orienteering, rock climbing, tramping and, of course, mountainbiking.
